A
Doe and her two fawns, grazing their way across the front lawn, pause to
return the gaze from the car just pulled over to observe. It is difficult to spend much
time here and not observe, first hand, resident deer meandering
throughout America's Wild Rivers Coast.
Regular viewing at the homes of sea lions,
osprey, pelicans, elk and other wildlife can be planned.
But also imagine the excitement when you are rewarded for
keeping your eyes readied for the unexpected - an Osprey, a
Seal, a Pelican or even a Bear, suddenly diving then
emerging from the water with its sparkling salmon prey
wrestling within its mouth or claws - or a close range
sighting of one of the many herds of elk moving across their
territory - or a red tailed hawk, or a bald eagle circling
its prey - or perhaps one of the most sought after sightings
of all, the magnificence of whales, swimming close to shore,
spouting and then gracefully breaching their enormous bodies
out of and so smoothly back into the sea.

Keep your eyes, your camera, and your
binoculars readied for when you, or someone in your
group, cries out with exhilaration. "Look
there!" "Where?" "To the right about 50
feet!" pointing excitedly.
This is
a regularly rewarding scenario throughout America's
Wild Rivers Coast! |

These are the exciting times! Another dimension to
wildlife is the opportunities for prolonged, peaceful,
pondering that can occur. Imagine positioning yourself
to view the Rogue Reef rookery, home to one of the nation's
largest remaining communities of Golden Stellar Sea Lions.
Watch and wonder about the delicate balance between these
federally classified endangered species, the fish and waters
they need for existence, and the humans trying to live in
proximity with joy and harmony.
The beaches of America's Wild Rivers Coast afford
numerous, and incredible opportunities for
tide-pooling, the adventure of discovering a wide and
wild assortment of animals and plants in rocky coastal areas
during a low-tide.
Should human needs take precedence over wildlife needs?
How about just human wants, preferences, or even whims?
What logic or standard should be used in pondering such
questions? These are questions that do not often reach
human consciousness when streaking down a freeway or rising
in an elevator to the 50th floor. However, the sight
of feathers, fur, or antlers in their natural setting can
pave the way to consideration of such complex issues.
And hopefully, a lingering respect for, and willingness to
discuss, living in harmony with all god's creatures.
Welcome to America's Wild Rivers Coast,
101 miles of nature's best!
