preview HIGHLIGHTS here

Mention the word kayaking, and the image of a robust 18 year old daredevil swishing his way back and forth through rushing rapids and over waterfalls may snap into the mind's eye.  For some, this is the experience they seek.  And America's Wild Rivers Coast surely affords such opportunities.

But for others, with little or no experience, venturing out in one of these small craft that is worn as much as it is ridden, can be safe, exhilarating, and very feasible.  Sit-on-top, as opposed to cockpit kayaks, address the most intimidating fear of kayaking, rolling over and being trapped.  If it rolls over, you fall off, immediately transforming you into a swimmer, and usually in shallow water.  The frequent choice of beginners, a sit-on-top and a life-vest can shorten the learning curve, sometimes to just minutes.

Mild! Wild! Or just fun!  Like Kayaks, Kayakers come in assorted sizes, shapes, and capabilities!

Both the novice and the pro can find craft and sections of river to safely suit their interests and ability.  And fun, fun, fun!

Like no other, these self directed, human powered, craft can offer a unique, and exhilarating, perspective of the river and its banks.

Kayakers come to our Wild & Scenic Rivers for all the thrilling, challenging sport it can be.  But for others, like the author, it's a time to get close to the river and gradually come to trust its therapeutic ability to relax, clear the mind, and impart a belonging to nature.  And if you become a regular, kayaking can provide all the endurance type of exercise you care to absorb.

In the early morning, or late evening when the water is calm and the mood is right, you can sense animal life coming alive.  Whether you were born to it, or spent your entire life in the city, times like these can put kayakers in touch with a sometimes hidden, deep love, and appreciation of nature.

Ever thought of a full moon paddle in a kayak?  The "Lunartics" are an informal group who regularly paddle the rivers and creeks of America's Wild Rivers Coast, including paddling out when the moon is full, from spring to fall.  Visit their kayaking website for local kayaking information, and the possibility of joining them during your visit.

Descriptive and photo highlight previews can provide a helpful overview of the activities of the region.

Welcome to America's Wild Rivers Coast, 101 miles of nature's best!
